A Year In The Life - Day 132, September 30, 2014

A shot of a rub, likely made by a particular bull we ran into at least twice this year...possibly a third time...but still, things didn't mesh... and he still walks.  Sarah and I know who you are...Farewell, my friend.

A Year In The Life - Day 126, September 24, 2014

Finally connected myself...had run into this fellow a few days previous and he eluded Sam and I...but not today.  We did have to 'reach out' a bit for him though...lol..story to follow moose season...lots of cutting to do and maybe another hunt for #4...

Sam scored today right across the river.  Made that walk many times but never with bloody hands. Until tonight.

Trying to get the cutting of meat from Sarah's moose out of the way to make room for the next one...

A Year In The Life - Day 121, September 19, 2014

She went and did it!  Dropped him with one shot right where he stood.  Victory!  Story to follow...sometime after the season most likely...

A Year In The Life - Day 120, September 18, 2014

Fall is surely here now.  A different angle of the original Russian Mission Church, this time from the cemetary.

A Year In The Life - Day 119, September 17, 2014

Lots of walking around in the woods these days, as moose season is getting into full swing.  This is a shot Sarah took while out and about of a lichen we haven't identified yet...

A Year In The Life - Day 118, September 16, 2014

Happy Birthday to Sarah today!!!!  Though she likely would be annoyed if I put a pic of her on for today...so here's Abram, being goofy in his new digs....

A Year In The Life - Day 117, September 15, 2014

Tonight's beaver set.  The lake was flat-calm and the weather tonight was stereotypical fall greatness.  Sarah went across the river to hunt the meadow for moose, but before she did, we all (the 4-H Club) went back out to the lake again and made a beaver set here:  Thought the pic was a nice one that said Fall is definitely here.  Castor mound set was just to the right of the slide on the right side of the lodge.

A Year In The Life - Day 116, September 14, 2014

Being in the bush, you hear and see a LOT of 185's buzzing around, and you end up riding a LOT of them too.  After a bit you don't even think anything of it.  Sometimes they even fly right over your head as you cruise out to the river, and you can get a good shot of the plane and its Fall reflection as it buzzes you on the way in for a landing...

A Year In The Life - Day 115, September 13, 2014

Today we got out to gather some cranberries, and the weather, though windy, was great for it. (Actually the ind helped a lot with the remaining bugs that have lived through several frosts now...) The haul wasn't extraordinary, but we had a lot of fun.  Here's Warren heading up the trail with his new found friend, the berry picking scoop, while mom and Abram look on...

A Year In The Life - Day 114, September 12, 2014

Living in the bush (with two little ones) makes you multi-task as much as possible. Just what are we talking about?... Like, for example, going for a walk-the-dog-while-we-check-the-post-office-then-go-make-a-beaver-set-then-move-the-boat-due-to-weather-then-go-for-our-daily-family-walk..... trip. Yep. here's a shot during one of those.  A beautiful day - or at least parts of it were.

A Year In The Life - Day 113, September 11, 2014

A greeting from one of the beavers of the week, caught in a 330.  I'd almost swear that's a beavery smile he's giving us...

A Year In The Life - Day 112, September 10, 2014

Abram all decked out and ready for action on another adventure in the boat.  He has now gotten to where just getting him ready and in the pack fires him up, 'cause he knows there are adventures in store...That pack takes a filthy, fish slimy, blood-smeared, dirty boat floor and turns it into a viable spot for an 11-month old to be...relatively unattended... :D

A Year In The Life - Day 111, September 9, 2014

Warren caught in a rare moment of 'rest' and reflection while outside on a camping trip.  The endless motion does cease, once in a lifetime.... :)

A Year In The Life - Day 110, September 8, 2014

For today: Some 'Fish Skins' from the past week.

First, the spawning colors of a dolly varden.  This one is the largest I've seen in Kako lake, released in good health.

Next up, a Coho, not nearly as far along as the dolly, but the spawning colors are clearly shining through.

And then we have the northern pike, not spawning at all, but still makes a great abstract photo...

A Year In The Life - Day 109, September 7, 2014

The family on our trip up to Tucker's slough on a 'moose hunt' for Sarah-slash-camping-trip-turned-boat-ride-and-hike. We didn't end up staying in the cabin, just checked out the meadows nearby and then ran around a bit.  Got to put some points in on the gps for later in the month, and the boys had a blast, and so....mission accomplished. :)

A Year In The Life - Day 108, September 6, 2014

Well, the beavers aren't beyond the threshold yet..they ARE still responding to the ol' castor mound set after all... :D

A Year In The Life - Day 107, September 5, 2014

The Kako camp group shot, minus the fam, who had to head out due to the cold nights.  For more on the trip, check out the post I will try and get on later this week.  Once I do, I will replace this with the link...

A Year In The Life - Day 106, September 4, 2014

Though a bit grainy, this shot of the sunrise this morning says a lot about Kako camp this year.  The nights were clear and COLD.  That did allow for some nice northern lights viewing though.  No pics of those unfortunately.  Fires like this were a must when crawling out from the tent.  S, W, and A decided to head home after the first night of cold babies and sleeplessness for all.

A Year In The Life - Day 105, September 3, 2014

Kako camp 2014 is here!  (well, was here, and of course is now over or else I wouldn't have internet to post with...)  I shall open it with a shot of Abram crawling over the cookfire woodpile.  Quality assurance inspector...

A Year In The Life - Day 104, September 2, 2014

Today signifies the first beaver castor mound set of 2014 that DIDN'T connect.  Up until now, 2014 was a 100% affair.  There always comes a time in late fall when the beavs say "enough" with that and get down to their more serious task at hand: storing up for the winter.  Who cares if there is an intruder around if you are going to starve, right?  Nonetheless, I think this 'zero' was more about the placement of the set than the timing.  Even though one had the chance to get in the trap beforehand, the mound was covered in mud overnight after the bank sloughed off during some rain and heavy wind.  Set is behind a log about 4-5 feet right of the lodge. We plan to set a bunch more at Kako camp this coming week, so those beavers better not have shut off yet...if so, this would be the earliest I've seen...

A Year In The Life - Day 103, September 1, 2014

As moose season now coincides with fall beaver trapping, and spruce chicken (grouse) hunting, time is getting short.  To add to the mix, this year was a slow and low one on berries, and so we are still trying to gather some more of those as we come across them.  Today's shot is one of a cluster of hanging wild currants, caught in the sunlight just right so as to emerge from the surrounding green.  One more step right or left and they couldn't be seen.  Not sure if the pic does the actual scene any justice, as usual, but at any rate, we found another group of currant plants, that, at this point, are getting harder and harder to find.  With more frosts coming fast, these will soon be gone...
