"What the heck is this?" ...you ask? It is the frost crystals forming at the entrance to a mouse hole. A well-used one...all those crystals mean a whole-lotta mouse breath coming out that hole... Pretty cool when you stop to notice the small stuff while you are out in the great wide open. (note below)
In this pic the hole from above is at lower right, semi-hidden behind the grass. You can see the trail leading from the hole to the nearest tree and back again. They have gone back and forth so many times the little tracks are well trenched into the crusty snow, each time stepping in the same prints.
