If the weather lately weren't evidence enough of that, this last trip out on the line sure was. It was a great trip on a nice day, but a reminder that it won't be long until I'll be wishing it was either still last season, or the new one was underway.
Headed out to check the remaining sets this weekend and scored twofold, while at the same time missing out on a marten at the wolvy set. Here was what he left behind for me:
Won't get 'em all....
As for the "spring" stuff...
On the way in I was enjoying the layer of new snow that we just got when all of a sudden the machine just lurched backward and I was looking skyward. What the...?!?.. Overflow. On the way out I took some pics. This is nothing like the stuff me and Niles got into in the driftwood slough in the '10 movie, or like when Sarah and I hydroplaned across that entire tundra lake when the ice completely broke underneath us - or when I got wet feet crossing the Atchulinuk that looked solid - or a number of other incidents...but it was still a 24 inch deep hole - enough to make you wonder for a second. After looking back at the hole behind me I snapped a couple pics:
Sometimes that's how it happens. Looks like all is well and then the world drops out from below you.
An little ice wall formed when the Yukon's water shrank away beneath the ice a few feet and no longer supported it...
Looks like its time to get in a few more manaq trips in and it'll be time to put the machine up...for me...
